Ruthenium trichloride (RuCl3), also known as ruthenium(III) chloride, is a black crystalline powder. The product itself is non-combustible and chemically stable at room temperature and pressure. It releases toxic gases upon high-temperature decomposition and has corrosive properties. It finds widespread applications as a spectrally pure reagent, in the chlor-alkali industry for metal anode ruthenium coatings, and as a hydrogenation catalyst due to its good electrochemical performance and high specific capacitance.
Ruthenium trichloride can be divided into two types: α-type and β-type. The α-RuCl3 is a black glossy crystal, insoluble in alcohols and water, while β-RuCl3 is a brown-black fluffy crystal, soluble in alcohols and water. The magnetic susceptibility χm of ruthenium trichloride is about 2300×10-6emu (electromagnetic unit) (293K), exhibiting strong antiferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures and being insoluble in water and ethanol. The β-type is a brown solid with a relative density of 3.11. It decomposes above 500°C and is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol. When heated to 700°C in chlorine gas, β-RuCl3 transforms into the α-type, while the α-type transforms into the β-type at 450°C. β-RuCl3 can color non-polar solvents but has very low solubility.
